just some pics

This is our "deefer". He comes about every night and isn't afraid of us. When I was painting, he came right up to the screen door where i was. I kinda wish he was scared of me.

These are my chicks. I make cute people. They are such fun and cute girls. I admit, Camryn was tough one for about six and a half years, but I think we have figured her out and this new no-sugar camryn is amazing. (Yes, her hair is green) She is sweet and helpful and hasn't lost her quirkiness. She writes a lot of stories these days and they crack me up. Her latest is about a boy king duck and a girl king duck that get married and struggle to unite their kingdoms. I asked why the girl duck isn't a queen and she said,"because she is a king!" So now I know.

Preslie is a crazy little lady. She is a perfect experiment in the "it takes a village" theory. She has many moms and many dads. She doesn't prefer anyone over anyone else. She loves everybody. I think she was sent to me when she was because she was going to have to have TWELVE different moms while I was sick. Sometimes I get a little sad that she's not a mamma's girl, but I wouldn't trade her being everyone's little girl for anything.

Sienna has always been sweet and good and way too grown up. Reading is her passion now and we'll often read the same books and then get to talk about them together. SHe finished Little Women and it's her favorite. Check out her shelf: http://www.shelfari.com/sien8na/shelf

I didn't get any great pics of Mason because my camera isn't fast enough. He's a wildman. I'll keep trying, though.

Tagged from Denmark

I haven't been tagged before, so how can i resist Marianne? I love feeling like I have a friend on the other side of the world. Hooray for cancer that made Mel make me a blog that helped us find each other. I left the questions in Danish, too, because it is such a crazy-looking language. I wish I could write my responses in Danish - but alas, I'm not as smart as Marianne.

Hvad lavede du for 10 år siden?
What did you do 10 years ago?

Ten years ago I was living in Provo, Utah. I was almost pregnant with Sienna and Jaymee had just graduated from BYU but had been turned down for med school. It was a sad time, but ended up being a huge blessing because we got to spend one stress-free year together. We both just worked and played a lot. He was able to be around for my first pregnancy and also really got to bond with Sienna before he started school again. He has been so busy since then. I think it was the glue we needed to get through all that was in store for us. I'm so glad Heavenly Father sees the big picture and always has a better plan for us than we could make for ourselves.

5 ting på to-do listen i dag
5 things on my to-do list today

Finish Bazzill's summer catalog
Go more miles than Brittany (I'm catching up!)
Paint some more of my living room. My friend once told me he hated painting with the fire of 1,000 suns. I now understand.
Laundry, laundry. Always laundry.
Mow that one little strip of grass that I somehow missed a few days ago. How did I do that?

Snacks I enjoy

Cinnamon bears
Dark chocolate milky ways
Rainbow sherbet ice cream. Mel said that "comfort foods" aren't necessarily mashed potatoes and cornbread and such - it's more like the foods you ate as a kid when life was easy and you felt safe and taken care of. I think that's why I went through 200 bowls of rainbow sherbet when I was sick. When I was little, my dad would scoop us up some almost every night and my brother Travey and I would mix it to see what color we would get. For some reason we always acted surprised when it was light brown. It was ALWAYS light brown.

Ting jeg ville gøre hvis jeg var milliardær
Things I would do if I was a billionaire

Pay off all our student loans and other debt. I guess that's obvious.
Go to Denmark
Buy Jeff a new practice out here
You know, there is so much good that could be done. But I could think of things that might not do as much good, but would be fun, fun. I'd like to go to restaurants and pick tables at random and anonymously pay for their meals. Or go to a car dealership and pay for someone else's car. "Put it on my tab." Do things so that people get mail that says,"someone already paid your property taxes this year." or "You got a full-ride scholarship because you held open the door for someone toting 4 kids a couple weeks ago." It would be SO FUN to go around and seek people out to secretly help. And not just poor people. Anybody. What a blast. Hurry. Give me some money!

that's mrs. DOCTOR stroud to you.

Friday night Jaymeson graduated from Washington University's radiation oncology residency program. Thus ending his TWENTY-EIGHT years of school. Sweet. Four years undergrad, four years med school, one year transitional residency and four years radiation oncology residency. Sheesh. That boy can study!

We've had so many beginnings lately, I had forgotten the endings. I was all about NEW. New house. New job. It didn't really hit me until Friday that he really was graduating and done. End. Wow. I am so proud of him that I could burst. I know first-hand what kind of doctor he is. They passed around an email to his department and asked for a word or two that came to mind when they thought of Jaym. They said he was the best-dressed, hottest, nicest boy scout. (Luckily for me, the one who said he was hot was a gay guy.) They said lots of nice things about him. Sometimes I don't whether to burst with pride or stand up and tell everyone to BACK OFF - he's taken.

I'm so lucky. He has handled so much of this without ever acting like it's too much. He has always made time for us no matter how hectic his work got. He has helped me with my job and supported me in my stressful times, too. He is an awesome dad. Not only my kids, but all the kids we know are crazy about him. He's so much fun.

Some other things you might not know about Jaymee:

He is a dynamic figure, often seen scaling walls and crushing ice. He has been known to remodel train stations on his lunch breaks, making them more efficient in the area of heat retention. He translates ethnic slurs for Cuban refugees, he writes award-winning operas, he manages time efficiently. Occasionally, he treads water for three days in a row. He is probably the best soccer player in the world and perfectly understands the laws of physics.

He can pilot bicycles up severe inclines with unflagging speed, and he can cook Thirty-Minute Brownies in twenty minutes. He is an expert in stucco, a veteran in love, and an outlaw in Peru.

Using only a hoe and a large glass of water, he once single-handedly defended a small village in the Amazon Basin from a horde of ferocious army ants. He plays bluegrass cello, he was scouted by the Mets. He is the subject of numerous documentaries. When he's bored, he builds large suspension bridges in our yard. He enjoys urban hang gliding. On Wednesdays, after work, he repairs electrical appliances free of charge.

He is an abstract artist, a concrete analyst, and a ruthless bookie. Critics worldwide swoon over his original line of corduroy evening wear. He doesn't perspire. He is a private citizen, yet he receives fan mail. He has been caller number nine and has won the weekend passes. Last summer he toured New Jersey with a traveling centrifugal-force demonstration. He bats .400. His deft floral arrangements have earned him fame in international circles. Children trust him.

He can hurl tennis rackets at small moving objects with deadly accuracy. He once read Paradise Lost, Moby Dick, and David
Copperfield in one day and still had time to refurbish an entire dining room that evening. He knows the exact location of every food item in the supermarket. He has performed covert operations for the CIA. He sleeps once a week; when he does sleep, he sleeps in a chair. While on vacation in Canada, he successfully negotiated with a group of terrorists who had seized a small bakery.

He balances, he weaves, he dodges, he frolics, and our bills are all paid. On weekends, to let off steam, he participates in full-contact origami. Years ago he discovered the meaning of life but forgot to write it down. He has made extraordinary four-course meals using only a Mouli and a toaster oven. He breeds prize-winning clams. He has won bullfights in San Juan, cliff-diving competitions in Sri Lanka, and spelling bees at the Kremlin. He has played Hamlet, he has performed open-heart surgery, and he has spoken with Elvis.

Now he has graduated from his radiation oncology residency.

I couldn't be more proud. Or a bigger plagiarist.

oh, i don't know, just stuff mostly

We've hauled some barges in our day. My mom came to visit this past week. She's a hoot. We were on our way to Grant's Farm and she said,"I want to go inside the Arch!" So we turned off the freeway and went to the Arch. While we were finding parking, she said,"Ooh! I want to go on that boat!" So she got us tickets for the Tom Sawyer riverboat. It was really fun even tough we didn't learn a thing about Tom Sawyer. We learned about coal. Lots of coal is transported down that muddy water. Asphalt, too!

We were so overcome with exciting barge facts that we didn't end up going in the Arch after all - which is ok by me. I've done it before. You have to hunch over inside a "Mork-calling-Orson, Come-in-Orson" egg with your knees touching the person across from you and crying kids on your lap. When you get to the top, it's like an airplane without seats and you might get a chance to look out the tiny windows if it's not too crowded. Claustrophobia! (Wow. All my life I thought that was claustERphobia. Thank you spell check. Thank you.)

It was great having Mom here. I wish so badly we lived by each other. Rip off. We love her so much. I was very sad to see her go. She was the best person to be the first to see our house. She's a great gusher. It was so fun to show her. She went on and on. One night Mason came in yelling,"there's a DEEFER on the porch!" So we went and looked and there was a huge raccoon out there hauling our garbage can away. I don't know why it's a "deefer". We saw a turtle and a bunch of cardinals. We also saw a baby deer prance around the front yard. And a rainbow and singing and fairies that granted us wishes. I love my house so much.

So our pool is open and has been full of people. I'm pretty sure we're the only one in either ward with a pool - therefore it belongs to the Stake. That makes me happy. Then I don't have to feel guilty about being the one with the pool. The young men have already had an activity here; the young women are coming tomorrow and the young women from the other ward are coming next week. For everyone else, it's swim day every wednesday from 12 -5pm. See you here! If you want to come another time, feel free! Gimme a call. Only I'll probably send my kids out to swim with you. They practically die if they have to go a day without swimming. You can tell from Camryn's green hair.

The story of Oz

I love turtles. I always have. I don't know why. All I know is that my obsession has grown 1000x since we moved to Illinois. There are turtles all over the place. At one point we had seven turtles. Two box turtles in the yard, two big pond turtles in the pond and three red-eared sliders in a tank inside. Their names were Humble, C5, Mr. Chicken, Shelly (a neighbor kid named that one), Captain Hammer, Sam & Ella. I can spot a turtle from a mile away. The day before my birthday last year, I found a little baby box turtle crossing the path at the park by my house. Best birthday ever!

Ok, so here's my latest turtle story. We went to a resident retreat at the Lake of the Ozarks a couple weekends ago. On the way home I spotted a big, beautiful box turtle about to cross the street. I had to have it of course, even though there's a pretty hefty fine for removing wildlife. We named him Oz and put him in my footwell. He was mad. He wanted to bite me. I had to sit indian style to spare my toes. He sat down there hissing with his mouth open.

So then, of course, Jaymee gets pulled over for speeding. I'm more scared about the fine for the turtle so I put my legs down in the footwell to block the officer's view of Oz. My upper lip begins sweating (I hate how it does that) because I know at any minute I am going to be bit and scream out and give the game away. Every time the turtle steps on a wrapper or makes another noise, I had to put my hand down there to further block the view and also to make it seem as if I had made the noise. I thought I was going to lose a finger. I was so nervous. I'm sure I looked as if I were hiding drugs.

When the officer came back to give us the ticket, Jaymee started asking a bunch of questions.
Who do I call?
Where's the phone number?
Do you know the receptionist?
Is she nice?
Does she work every day?
Can I fight it in court?
Would I have to go to court out here?
Do you know the judge personally?
Is he nice?
How does he take his coffee?

All the while I am about to get eaten by a rabid turtle AND have to pay some massive fine. I start interrupting.
Ok. Thanks, Officer.
That's all we need to know.
We're sorry.
We'll never speed again.
You can go now.
Please leave.
Walk away from our car.

He finally leaves and Jaymee turns to me with daggers in his stare and says,"what the heck is wrong with you??!!" I point to the turtle and he says,"Oh crap! I forgot about the turtle!!"

So anyway, we take Oz three more hours in the car and release him in the backyard. I see him every day and fall in love with him. The day before we're supposed to move, however, he is missing. Shucks. We move and then I go back to clean the other house and get out of it because I FOUND OZ!! Yes! I brought him to the new house and released him in the yard by the pool.

Today, Jaymee ran over him with the riding lawnmower.

That didn't end how you thought it would, did it?

my biggest fears

I consider myself a pretty tough and independent gal. I can do almost anything if I have to. Most the time I have to. I don't think there are killers in my garage waiting to kill me. I can sleep with the door unlocked. I don't think my kids are going to be kidnapped. I could do most of the stuff on Fear Factor. And yet, I'm not immune to nightmares or stupid worries. The new house is making me face most of my fears.

My biggest fears are these (in random order):

1. sharks
2. scorpions and poisonous spiders
3. my kids drowning
4. eating with a metal spoon out of a metal bowl
5. my kids being spoiled
6. Telling big floor-layers they have to redo things
7. wal*mart
8. listening to my little brothers slurp cereal... i don't know if this is still one, but it used to be.

My kids were shouting that there was a spider in the bathtub with them yesterday and I said,"just a second!!!"
"But Mom, it's a BIG one!"
"OK! I'm coming already, sheesh!"

There was indeed a big brown spider in the tub with Camryn and Preslie. I caught it with some tissue and it crawled out and came after me. I'm not kidding. I threw it in the sink before it got on my hand. I went to brush it into the drain and it came running towards my hand. It was aggressive like how scorpions are. I killed it and got a total case of the creeps. Spiders don't usually bother me - unless they are my childhood nemesis - the black widow. This one really creeped me out because it wanted to get me. I looked it up on the internet and it was a BROWN RECLUSE! You can tell because it has a perfect little violin on it's back. Have you seen the damage these guys can do? If one of your fears isn't looking at gross-out pictures, look up "brown recluse bites". Their venom is flesh-eating and you can lose limbs from it. I'm unhappy that one was swimming with my babies. I can't stop thinking about it. Shiver shiver.

MY TRIP!

Ok, ok! Here it is. I'm glad my sister is TOTALLY INSANE and put up her view of my trip so that I would actually get on this. She is nuts. Don't you wish you had one like her?

This is us in Rome.

So here's the quick overview:
To celebrate beating cancer and well, being alive, we took a five day cruise in the Mediterranean. It started in Barcelona, went to Cannes, Florence, Rome and then back to Barcelona again. I do not love Barcelona. I feel like we always get ripped off there, we have to worry about being robbed all the time and there just isn't that much to do. I'm always hungry in Barcelona. We got there a day early and I couldn't wait to get on the boat.

We cruised on Royal Caribbean on the Navigator of the Seas. It's a big, awesome boat. It has lots of amenities that we never used like an ice skating rink, rollerblading track, miniature golf, rockclimbing wall, etc. The food was so good. There were two different soft-serve ice cream machines that you could go stick your head (or a cone) under at any time. I love sleeping on a boat. So dark, so rocking, rocking gently. So tired just thinking about it.

This is Cannes, France.

I told you I was Euro-hip. Truly, about one in ten women had hair like mine. Cancer must be rampant in Europe. They should do something about that. We were there right before the big film festival and things were already set up. It was a real cool town. We played at the beach and then walked around the city. I ate a crepe with bananas and ice cream inside. Their ice cream is much better than ours. There, I said it. When I asked Mason what he wanted as a souvenir, he said a TV. When I told him I couldn't get a TV, he said he wanted a big, orange sucker. I found it in Cannes.

That's our boat and my cute, cute husband. His neck isn't that long in real life. Just in France. There were 3,000 passengers on the boat, but only about 500 were from America. That was really cool. There were people from about 40 different countries on board.

This is Melanie Stroud (Jaymee's brother's wife and my long-time friend - dating back to our primary days), Brittany Atkinson (Jaymee's sister) and of course, me in FLorence.

Florence is a beautiful place. All of Tuscany was. I love Italy. I'd like to go back someday and spend a couple weeks there. We saw beautiful architecture and amazing works of art. Before you go to Florence, read "the Agony and the Ecstasy" so you can really picture Michelangelo running all through that city. I loved it there. I ate real pizza and bruschetta that had so much olive oil that it ran all down my arm while I ate it. And more gelato. Always gelato.

We bought some shoes and some paintings there. Doesn't that sound fancy? The shoes were ten euro and the paintings were about the same. I'm not a big spender.

This is Brandon (Jaymee's brother) and you know the rest at Trevi Fountain in Rome. If you throw three coins over your shoulder here, you'll get the chance to come back someday. We did it and hit three tourists below us and were asked to never come back. Rome was overwhelming and unbelievable. It's amazing that it was built in one day, because we didn't even have time to see one-hundredth of it in as much time. It seems one could spend weeks in the Vatican alone. That place is a bit much. Gold and marble and frescos everywhere. jaymee and I got some great ideas for our new house there. I loved seeing the Sistine Chapel. I didn't love the people in there that clapped real loud and yelled ,"Quiet!!". I wanted to lay on the floor so my neck wouldn't hurt looking up on the ceiling. As it turns out, they frown upon that. In fact, there was much "frowning upon things" at the Vatican. Don't take pictures in the chapel. Don't imitate the people in the Frescos. Don't use the tapestries to wipe your nose. I had to walk around with my arms folded for a long time.

We saw the colosseum, too. That place has seen better days. Oura toura guidea wasa verya harda toa underastanda - so I can't tell you much more about that place. I loved the Pantheon, but I had always pictured it being up on a hill. Turns out, it used to be but now they have built the city up so much around it that it is just in the middle of one of the squares. It made me think maybe Camryn's floor isn't actually level with her mattress. I'm going to look into it. I definitely want at least a week in Rome next time.

We spent the next day at sea and I got a massage. While the little Romanian jumped up and down on my back, all I could think of was "why me?". Truly, why am I so blessed and lucky? That trip was the best. Even if it rained gatos y perros during our bus tour of Barcleona with Melanie and Brandon. Even if my flight got cancelled and Jaymeson made it home without me. Even if I didn't have any food for 24 hours because he had the money with him. It was the best week of my life.

My Trip to Europe!

Phew. I finally have a second to tell about my fabulous vacation. It was so so fun and I'm so glad that I went. The food was excellent and the company was divine. I loved Italy the most - so I will post all my Italy pictures today and then I can post the rest later.

Here are Jaymeson and I in Southern Italy. I think my brother served in this city of Catania. The ice cream here was the best!

I couldn't get enough to EAT - really. I gained like 35 lbs. while I was there. We had dinner this night with a lady that looked JUST like my mom. It was so freaky. Also, when you order pizza there - they give each person their own pizza! Crazy!

When we went to the Vatican, Jaymeson decided to try on this little outfit. He is the funnest husband. How I adore him!

Right here in a church in Rome, Jaymeson proposed to me and asked if I would marry him all over again!!! What a stud. "Of course, of course!" I screamed. (And THIS time - he's almost rich!)

But first I had to convert to Catholicism.

We looked so good and it was so fun that we decided to do it twice.

I loved Rome. So much to see and so ROMANTIC!!

In Florence we saw the David. As an artist it was so beautiful that it brought me to tears.

I bought a picture by a local artist and he signed it! I think I'll have it framed and give it to Melanie to hang in her boys room.

Really, I picked grapes in Tuscany!!!

And then we went to Sienna and I watched the most famous horse race in the country. What a view I had!

Venice was everything I dreamed it would be.

I found a new use for the Europian Bidet. It was a total soother for sore, tired feet.
I am so grateful that I went on this fabulous vacation. The only thing that would have made it would have been if my favorite sister in the whole world, Melanie Wellman would have been able to go with me. Boo hoo. Maybe next time.

We're Home-Os!!

That's the hip way to say homeowners. Try it. People will react. The couple we bought the house from designed and built it 21 years ago. They raised all their kids there and then ended up getting a divorce. When I showed up at the property yesterday morning for the final walk-through, the owner was out mowing the lawn one last time. I told him how excited I have been and how I can't wait to raise my kids there and he started to cry and cry. It broke my heart. He was our age when they built it. We met his ex-wife at the closing and I ended up hugging her while she cried and cried too. I vow to not let it end up that way for me. It is a magical house and it is too sad for me to think about somebody having to leave it.

We spent the night there last night and the kids HAD to sleep in Sienna's closet. I don't know why. I guess because they could. jaym and I slept on the floor of our room and because I am still suffering from weird post-Europe jet lag, I wake up every morning about 4:30am. I watched the sun come up through my window and it was like all the trees in my front yard were on fire. The rays bounced off the lake and seemed to light everything from underneath. It was beautiful. I couldn't be happier.

The kids were up at about seven and were dressed and ready to go outside before I had a chance to throw cheerios in their respective tummies. They were gone for a couple hours exploring and came back with all sorts of treasures. I can't wait to go explore, too.

I know I need to get back to my Europe trip and I will. This was just fresher in my mind.

Love to you.

no talk for time

Er, no time for talk. What a week! I want so badly to tell you about my trip. About Rome and stupid Barcelona. I want to tell you about how my husband got to leave and I was stuck in Europe all alone with no money. I want to tell you about the yummy food and how my hair was actually chic in Europe. Unfortunately, however, we're closing on two houses tomorrow and somehow ended up about $10,000 short. (Which is only about 6,000 euros) We have an inspection tonight and my kids saved up all their badness to unleash on me for leaving them. I've got my country's 500th anniversary to plan, my wedding to arrange, my wife to murder and Guilder to frame for it; I'm swamped.

and sienna's video

This one is sickeningly sweet. Be prepared. I hope they want to do pin the tail on the donkey next year instead of videos.

So I'm getting ready for my big trip on Saturday! Wahoo! Hip! Hip! But then of course, bad news. My best friend and her husband were coming with us and they found out this morning that her dad is in the hospital and will only live a few more days. They had to cancel and lose money on top of the grief that they will face. I feel so sorry for her. Poor, poor Mami. I will miss her very much.

We have been on "new house" and "trip" mode at the same time and it's very scary because I am sure I'm forgetting something. We close on both houses 4 days after we get back and then some flooring guys go in and rip out the floors to put in the hardwood the day after that. I've got to schedule floor guys, movers and shakers all before we leave. What am I forgetting??

Anyway, I'm boring and I apologize. I should have something really meaty when I get back from Europe. If you know some great places in Barcelona, Cannes, Florence or Rome - lemme know. If you need me to bring you home a crepe, lemme know.

Things, mostly

I went to visit my new house today. We had a good chat. I welcomed it to the family. I told it that we'd be friends forever. I told it that as a member of my family, it will get lots of love but I can't always guarantee that it will be clean. Like my kids, it was a big struggle to get and I couldn't be happier. I realize it will be a lot of work, but so worth it. This house is really mine and I don't have to worry about not changing things to suit my own personal style because of resale. I can make forts out in the forest and dams in the stream. Mason and I can sit on the end of a (future) pier and fish for fish... or snapping turtles. I can paint things and knock out walls. Oooh! House doesn't know what hit it! This is going to be awesome. Come over, ok?

Here is something else. The other night I took my kids to Gator's and as I got them all out, I waited by the door of the van looking inside and Sienna said,"who are you looking for?" I counted my kids and realized they were all there and shook off the weird feeling that they weren't. But then I had the same feeling on Wednesday when I was getting all the kids into the car for Sisi's piano lesson. I don't think I'm a freaky person that has lots of weird premonitions or anything like that, but it was a very real feeling. So, you know, I hope this means that in the future - way in the future - I might be able to have another baby. I am not allowed to even try until 2 years from my last radiation treatment... so that means January 2010... and we might not be able to have any more anyway because of the effects of the chemo. Yet, I'm hopeful. I know, I know - I already have four and they are dirty and have their shoes on the wrong feet. But I love them. I feel like whether I can have one on my own or have to adopt or something in the future, there's another one out there. Remind me in a couple years when I say,"ARE YOU CRAZY?? NOW WAY!"

Wow. That was personal.

$3.71. C'mon!

That's what our gas is today. What's yours? Big oil jerks.

Mason, Mason, Mason

I had to put this tough-guy picture first so that it might balance out some of what I've said and also will say about this little dude.

The other day his babysitter asked him if Taylor was his girlfriend. He said,"yes!". Then she started teasing him saying,"Ooooh! Are you going to get married and be the daddy and Taylor will be the mommy and have lots of babies??" He laughed and said,"NOOOOO!! SHE's going to be the daddy and I'M going to be the mommy so she can go to work and I get to VACUUM!!"

A note from Clinton:

hi shelby,
i haven't read my website for a while. (life's a little busy these days.)
just wanted to say that it was great to meet you and that your story really touched me. i'm so glad WNTW could help you through your tough time. honestly, it means a lot to me that i can provide a little "info-tainment" for people who can use it.
i hope you enjoyed the macy's presentation. when i'm in town again, i expect to see you looking all healthy and glamorous.
xo,
clinton

What's Shakin'?

So I woke up at about 4am to my house shaking back and forth, back and forth. I thought it was a tornado and ran instantly to the window. (If there is anything I have learned from living in the midwest for the last nine years, it's that you should run right to a window in a tornado so that you can see it. Don't worry about shards of glass chasing your guts like the knives that flew around the old Tom & Jerry cartoons.) When I looked outside, the trees were still. Then my house started shaking again! The mirror was slamming against the wall. It was crazy. We ran downstairs and turned on the tv but all it told us was that an incredible new machine would make our abs flat faster than we can say,"was that an earthquake??!!"

It was! 5.2! I have an inspection and an appraisal on my house today and now I have an excuse for why it looks like it does. Something really did shake it!

SOLD!

Just a note to say we sold our house this past weekend. Phew! Thanks for your prayers. I'll never clean again! Just kidding. I actually cleaned it to perfect again yesterday just for me. Not for a showing. Not for company. Gotta go - preslie just threw her bowl of cereal.

Am I SHUT UP?!

A confession.

I had a bit of an obsession with What Not to Wear (on TLC) while I was sick. We didn't even have cable before that, but we figured I had a lot of "couch time" ahead of me so we got it. I used to watch this show back in Milwaukee and liked it but Clinton Kelly wasn't the co-host yet. ANYWAY, I found it again and started tivoing every episode. I feel sorry for everyone who came to visit me. I made them watch it too. I wandered around awake at night (steroids) rubbing my hands in a devious way while I came up with schemes to get nominated for the show. Obviously, nothing came of it, but I'm so glad there was something else for me to obsess over besides cancer all the time.

My friend found out that Clinton Kelly was coming to St. Louis, she got us reservations. He is even nicer in person. He was very gracious and interested and never acted like all of the freaky obsessed women were a bother. So now we're best friends and even have BFF necklaces and plan on going shopping together bi-weekly. Maybe not, but it was a really fun day.

Oh yeah, and here is my hair. It's dark, huh? I don't like when it makes a vampire point like that. I went back and forth about wearing my wig to this, but I thought it would be better if I looked cancery. It got me front of the line again! Cancer really is the gift that keeps on giving. I get a lot of compliments on it but I do not like it. I sometimes feel that people feel a need to say how cute it is to make me feel better. I think I look a little like I like the ladies, woo woo! I think a hairstyle like this takes a lot of confidence to pull off and I'm not really there because I didn't choose it, you know? I blush all day when I'm in public like this. But it is hair and I am grateful!!

Batter up!

Ok, bases were loaded, three balls - two strikes... the bottom of the clichè. Camryn's class was chosen to sing the national anthem at the Cardinals Game last Wednesday. I'm pretty sure they were selected because they were the class that could best sing it to the tune of "Happy Birthday". It was a great game. We beat the Rockies 234 to negative three. We had terrible seats and it was really cold. Doesn't matter, though. It's so fun to just be there.

I look like I'm wearing one of those hats with the fake hair sewn in. Ha ha. I'm getting braver. I've gone out without my wig a few times. Camryn told me to be sure to wear it when I went to eat lunch at her school with her on her birthday. Why? "Because you have the same hair as the boys in my class!" I do.

PHEEEEEWWWWWWWW!

I have been keeping something from you. I've been scared. I have been having trouble breathing the last couple weeks and have had to stop exercising. I couldn't get up the stairs without feeling like I was suffocating. It wasn't like before and that made me feel better but I was feeling a tightness in my chest. I thought it was probably not a big deal but always and probably forever I will have this scary doubter in the back of my head whispering,"cancer is back. cancer is gonna gitcha!" (He is spooky, huh?) Anyway, I went in an got a full scan today and cancer IS NOT back. Phew! I have a condition called Radiation Pneumonitis... maybe not spelled just like that. It's like pneumonia, but not from an infection and it probably won't get worse. It'll either get better on its own or I'll have to go back on steroids (just in time for baseball season!). Let's all pray that it'll go away on its own because I hated the steroids more than anything.

So anyway, now that everything is fine, let's all eat some krispy kremes.

Hard Work

I have been overwhelmed with the amount of work I have had to do every day since our house went on the market. We've had three showings and it is exhausting to try and keep it that clean. I was feeling really sorry for myself last night and the thought came to me - what about the people around you? Have you noticed how much they have had to do lately? How true it is! Take Preslie, for example. Every morning she has to overflow her diaper and soak her bed. Then she has to hurry and eat half a banana, use the other half like a chunky-slimy chapstick and kiss every glass surface in the house. Before the other kids even leave for school, she has to empty their laundry bins - always making sure to shove their underwear in my saucepans in the cupboard. She is very detail-oriented and a hard, hard worker. She makes certain that every bit of her cereal ends up on the floor and that there is always some kind of mystery food in her hair. The cushions must be removed from the couch and the toilet paper from the rolls. It is no wonder to me that she needs a long nap every afternoon and I should stop feeling sorry for myself and my short list of to-dos.

Freezing Garage Sale

We had a freezing garage sale this weekend. It was 30°. People still came! What a crazy place I live. Friday was 68° and that made us hopeful. It was about 50° at 7am when we started, so we were still hopeful. Then it was 30 and too late. Everything was out. Amy Cima was nice enough to do the ultimate solid of letting us have the sale at her house. She has a great location and our realtor wouldn't let us have it here. Now all that stuff is gone. We hauled away everything that didn't sell. I might become a bulimic just because it feels so good to PURGE. Ahhh. Clean house.

It's good that it's clean, too, because there are only 200 houses just like ours one the market in our area right now. Sheesh. I'm not going to get my hopes up. I'm already tired of keeping everything perfect. I feel like those guys at disneyland that walk around with the broom and dustpan waiting for people to drop something. Their job is never done and neither is mine. But at least they get a churro now and then.

i'm LOST

I have been watching LOST from the beginning. Now it's a little ridiculous. Am I right? For every answer, you get five more questions. Not to mention my biggest question,"Who is waxing their eyebrows?" Poor island dwellers with their perfect perfect eyebrows and their 2008 trendy clothing that happened to be in the luggage of a 2004 plane crash. I liked seeing Walt at the window last night. They probably had to have him kneel so he wouldn't look like he was now six feet tall. Maybe not a good idea to put a kid as a main character in a show where it takes 4 years to tell us about 4 months on an island. Perfect eyebrows. That's just stupid.

Another thing I like to do is "liken" tv to my daily life. So here is what I do: whenever I fly anywhere, I look around the plane and play "this is who would be on my island". So far I haven't seen any Sawyers, Kates, Claires... any of them. I definitely haven't seen anyone baby-carry a John Locke on to any of my flights - and I watch for it! I might have seen a Hurley or two. But mostly pudgy bald business men. Old ladies. Scruffy teenagers with loud iPods. Hardly a good cast for our crash. Who would save me from the black cloud? Or the polar bears? Nobody. At least I won't have to worry about cancer coming back though, hey?

Alex Passed Away

Our friend Alex passed away early yesterday morning. He was blessed enough to fall asleep Sunday morning and slip away peacefully. He had started having seizures on Saturday and we all prayed he wouldn't have to linger. Jaymeson went to say goodbye Sunday night and said there was a sweet spirit there. He told Alex we'd never forget him and I know that we won't. He was one of those guys that didn't go with the flow. He let himself be who he truly was. Those are my favorite people. He had such a strong testimony and knew the Lord had work for him to do. I'm so happy that he is is with his Savior now and can rest from the yuckiness that is cancer.

It is so strange that even though we have known since late last spring this would happen - even though we have prayed that he wouldn't have to suffer long - even though we know he is so much happier now - my heart is heavy and sad. I am being bombarded by emotions from all sides. From memories of my dad's last days that I didn't know I had to even more gratitude for the enormous blessings I have received this past year. Not to mention the reality of cancer and what it's capable of. Emotional times, my friends.

Please keep his family in your prayers!

a blue dress

So the other day Mason was practicing his ballet while watching Little Einsteins. He turned to me and said,"I want you to go to the store and get me a blue dress." That made me laugh. A nervous laugh. But my smile widened when I thought of telling Jaymeson about it later that night. Ha ha. His only boy. Actually, I thought Mason would just forget about it and move on. Nope. He has asked me for three days for a blue dress. I was telling our friends about it at a wedding luncheon on Saturday and they said, "Maybe that's the bribe you've been waiting for. Tell him you'll buy him a blue dress if he goes in the potty!" We all laughed - Jaymeson's was a nervous laugh. I figured I'd try it. Why not? I have already offered him a million dollars and he didn't care. In fact, I have already offered him a horse, a tractor, a ladder that goes all the way to the moon and even a spoon that would be only his - one his sisters could only dream of using. It didn't matter what I offered. He didn't care about being in diapers forever (ever! ever! ...that's an echo) So I said,"Mason, if you go pee pee and poopoo in the potty, I'll buy you a blue dress!" He went in the potty EIGHT times today.

Of course, the way I see it, we'll just deal with one problem at a time...

visuals - for karen

The kids at Hogwarts... or MoyeElementary

This is Hedwig. She was the belle of the ball. Strangers took pictures of her. It was really funny to watch her walk in that costume because she flaps her little wings. SHe likes dressing up.

This is our new house!

This is Jaymeson, Preslie and a Madagascar Hissing Cockroach. Gross. They had a bunch of weird animals in the "care of magical beasts" area at the Harry Potter night.

I fixed your blog

Now super tech savvy girl - you can have this unlovely ocher color if that was what all this was about - but I personally hate it.

I broke my blog

i'm so sad about it. I lost the good quotes and all the prettiness. I have to go back and re-add all the links and stuff again. I shouldn't have tried to do anything with it. I shoulda left it to Mel. Shoulda coulda woulda.

Monday, March 10, 2008

Oh, also...

I will pay you $200 to potty train Mason. That is what it is worth to me today. I don't want him going on his mission wearing diapers. Your house, my house - whatever. Just do it.

Thanks in advance.

ummm.... ummm.... i don't know

Hi. I get to feeling real guilty that I don't write on here very much anymore. That is because my life is busy and boraphil... er, boring. I'm trying my hardest to get his house ready to go on the market on the 20th. I hope it will happen. We have been working very hard. I've also been going to the gym and meeting with my friend who is getting her personal trainer's license. I dread going, hate it while I'm there and feel like dying afterwards. So that's good. I'm looking into hiring some little elves to come and help me sit down without falling because my legs hurt so much. They would have to sign a major non-disclosure agreement form.

I got to spend last Wednesday running around my house without the owner there. I was having an inspection done and it was really fun. I found a laundry shute. shoot. chute. There it is. Anyway, I'm sure my kids will have a blast putting Preslie down that. It is a fun fun house and I hope we spend the rest of out lives in it. We found out that our lake has snapping turtles. Hopefully that will deter the kids from drowning in it. Or maybe they will drown while being bitten by turtles. Great. Now I have a whole new scenario to keep me up at night.

With all of this going on, I'm afraid I've had to cut back on my Guitar Hero time and will probably have to move my tour to he spring, instead of the fall like I had hoped. I'll let you know when advance tickets go on sale.

sometimes i get frustrated

Ok, so I need to point out that I don't have half an inch of hair. Jaymee says it's more like a quarter at most. Lately it seems like it's not growing at all. People are all very nice and say that it's so great and I "look great with velcro for hair!" That's all good and fine, but lately I've been a little frustrated. It was so much easier to deal with the no hair thing when I had cancer. Because I had cancer. That's why I look like this. Cancer. But now, I don't have cancer anymore. So I don't want to look like this anymore. I feel like such a loser complaining because I'm not sick anymore and I have my energy back and I'm getting my strength back and life is good. SO why am I so vain? WHy do I care about these dumb leftover cosmetic effects? Whenever I start caring too much about my appearance I want to beat myself up. But I'm too wimpy and I might lose. I really feel like I don't care, but here I am caring. My brain knows it's ridiculous and a HUGE waste of time. It's even more unattractive than being unattractive. I'll stop now. I promise. I'm happy to be healthy. Really. Just wanted to vent.

Today is the last day of our "No Sugar February". Stupid leap year. I could be eating Chicks and Rabbits TODAY. The girls were awesome. They made it the whole month. They took Valentine's Day off, but other than that they were perfect. I'm so proud of them. They are proud of themselves, too. It was a good thing... and I'm glad it's over. Jaymeson lost seven pounds. Jerk. I didn't lose any. Lamebot. I don't really know what else I can do. Anybody out there have Nike+ and want to race me? Brittany is too good. Oh well. The good news is that I am getting stronger. I like that. I'm feeling human again. When I was in the midst of my treatments I was a BooBah. Have you seen that horrible show? That is what I looked and felt like.

Wah wah wah.

Love to you.

A new house!

So we bought a new house. It is awesome... well, it will be. The lot is the great part. It's on 6 wooded acres and has a lake and a creek running through it. It also has a pool. This is so great and so hard at the same time. I'm working full-time again (in theory) and I somehow still have four kids, an absent husband and now a house to sell. . . or set on fire. All too often my house looks like somebody picked it up and shook it real hard. That's not really what buyers are looking for, but what do I know? I've never sold a house before. Last time we moved, we ran as fast as we could out of our nasty gov't-built apartment yelling, "keep the deposit, you filthy animal!" Ah, the good ol' days.

I am attached to 1% of the junk in my house, so you'd think it would be easier to go through it and get rid of stuff. Piles, piles, piles. One thing about this blog is that I feel like through it I have found my voice. I thought someday I might write a book about my life or at least a short story. Unfortunately, however, it has already been written. It's Mason's favorite book. It's called "If You Give a Pig a Pancake" and it is how I function - or disfunction. I was trying to organize and clean my mudroom yesterday (and trying even harder not to set it on fire) when I found a bunch of our painting supplies shoved under the table. I thought, "before i put these away I should repaint that wall in the office that i started painting a different color before something distracted me..." So I go in there to paint. Before I could paint, though, I needed to move the couch. Boy was it dusty under there. I should sweep. The hall needs sweeping, too. Why are Camryn's shoes in the hall? Do these shoes even fit her anymore? I should give them to our friend Hailey. What else should I give to Hailey? I bet Camryn has lots of clothes in her closet that don't fit anymore. Wow. This closet is a mess... This is why Jaymeson comes home to a house that looks worse than when he left it and why I have to drag him around to see the 10% of 100 jobs that I completed so he knows he didn't marry a complete disaster. Or did he?

Front of the Line, Baby!

I totally recommend cancer. You might have a few "side effects", but did you know you could go to the front of the line at all of the rides at Disneyland? It's true. Just don't run. That makes people mad at you. I went to Disneyland with my sister and my friend Lisa last weekend. I had a conference in Anaheim, so I just went out a day early. Such a fun day. No kids! I was really tired and didn't feel great by the end of the day, but who does? Eat a lot of churros and then spin spin spin and I'll tell you what: it isn't cancer that's making you sick. Melanie told the guest services people that I was 10 days post-cancer and we were there to celebrate ("Shelby Stroud, you just beat cancer. What are you going to do next??"). So they gave us "honorary citizens of Disneyland" buttons and we had high hopes that we would get to sleep in Cinderella's castle. Unfortunately, that's not how it works according to our friend Erin of the Disney Dream Squad. So instead we decided to make one of HER dreams come true by letting her pick out anyone on which she wanted Melanie and Lisa to perform a "honorary citizen's arrest". She picked a scary dude. They did it, though, and we felt pretty good about being able to turn the tables like that.

I feel great. I almost have all of my energy back. I'm pretty wimpy but I'm working on that, too. I have about half an inch of hair now and it is black. Weird. I look like a pretty mean chick. It's great for playing Guitar Hero but I pretty much still wear my wig when I go out. Maybe I'll post a picture, I just fear attracting the wrong kinda girl...

Thank you, Mel

Thank you, Mel. You have been a great example to me my whole life. Your testimony and love of the scriptures is so beautiful. I have a deep love and gratitude for fasting, too. It is powerful. It is yet another way we give up a tiny bit and the Lord dumps blessings all over us. I have spent the last fiveish months being the recipient of the power of fasting. This week I was finally able to give back a little. I know its power and I will take every opportunity I get for the rest of my life to fast for anyone who needs it. Call me. I'll fast for you.

Our 18-year-old friend Alex has a brain tumor and is at the end of his six-year struggle now and our ward united to fast for him to be able to go peacefully. As you can imagine, I struggle to see him go. Why do I get to live and he doesn't? Luckily, being around him and speaking with his mom brings so much comfort. He is at peace with it and so we can't not be. He has his "peace blanket" that I mentioned in the beginning of my struggle and I can sit outside of it and wonder why and cry or I can grab an edge and climb under it and feel the warmth that comes from knowing Heavenly Father loves each of us so much and will find a way to make us so much happier than we can ever make ourselves if we let Him.

When my dad died almost 13 years ago, my family snuggled under the peace blanket for a long time. I was happy and the testimony that families are forever was handed to me to help me get through it. Sooner or later, however, I climbed out from under the blanket and began to feel ripped-off. It was a choice I made to leave that peace behind and feel sorry for myself, for my mom, for my younger brothers and sister who didn't get to know him as well as I did. For how much of him I never got to know. I got mad that he wouldn't meet my husband or play on the floor with my kids. Now, having just been through something that really was in the Lord's hands as to which way it would go - I understand better His love for me - for each of us. I know that when "bad" things happen, it's usually to bring about something even better. Every member of my family has been through the temple. All of my brothers have served missions. We are married with great kids. We love each other so much. My mom has shown her strength and proven herself and her capacity to endure. Maybe those things would have happened otherwise, who knows? What I do know is that the path the Lord put us on by taking my father when we were as young as we were has strengthened all of us and we are all very happy. We have sad times for sure, but I think we'll be surprised to know how much my dad has remained a part of our lives all along. Our blanket is always there for us to use if we want to feel that.
It's part of me now. I take it wherever I go. If you ever feel sad, come cuddle with me.

I'm so sorry for the pain that Alex and his family must still endure. My very favorite story of Christ is when He wept when Lazarus had died. He understood the plan better than anyone ever could and He still felt pain and sadness at that time. His compassion is overwhelming. He will cry with you, too. And so will I.

Gratitude fast

(This is Melanie)
Since this is Shelby's blog and there is no real reason for me to get on here anymore , I just wanted to depart with my love and gratitude. Today was Fast Sunday at church. Often, we fast and pray asking the Lord for the things we NEED or WANT. Sometimes there is something about ourselves that we need help in changing. Sometimes our loved ones are sick or in harms way or having some kind of trouble and we fast for them. We fast for the Lord to know we are serious about what we are praying for. When I was serving a mission in Japan many years ago and was struggling with the language and with trying to find anyone who wanted to hear our message, my whole family fasted for me. Even my little brother Jamey who was only 5 or 6 at the time fasted. The Lord listened and blessed me and my mission. I have learned that fasting is powerful. Every fast Sunday since Shelby got cancer my heart has been filled with the desire for the Lord to spare her; to heal her; to bless her with strength and courage. But today was different. Today I didn't fast FOR anything. Today I fasted out of gratitude.

In the Book of Mormon we read about the people of Nephi in Alma 45:1 "Behold, now it came to pass that the people of Nephi were exceedingly rejoiced, because the Lord had again delivered them . . . therefore they gave thanks unto the Lord their God; yea, and they did fast much and pray much, and they did worship God with exceedingly great joy." This is what I did today. I fasted today to let my Heavenly Father know how grateful I am that Shelby was made whole. I fasted today for the "time" she has left with all of us and for how important a part of my life she is. I was just grateful. I felt like I was "worshiping God with exceedingly great joy." And you know, I wasn't hungry. I was happy. Maybe we need to fast out of gratitude more. It was a very sweet, beautiful thing for me. Marvin J. Ashton once said that "a grateful heart sits at a continual feast." So it was for me today. I was not only grateful for Shelby's miracle but as the day progressed I was more and more thankful for President Hinckley and his life and his example. I was thankful for my family and my home and at dinner time, for my double oven :) I was thankful for the beautiful weather in Arizona in the winter and for the progress my sweet Lizzy has made just in the last few weeks. I could go on and on but I won't. This isn't my blog. But I just want all of you to know how much I love this gospel and am grateful for the miracles that I have seen throughout my life. I am thankful for the Book of Mormon that gave me the idea to fast out of gratitude. If you haven't had a gratitude fast before - try it next month. I am still choked up about how it made me feel all day.

Snow Day

Well, we had a snow day yesterday. All the kids got to stay home from school and spend the day within five feet of me at all times. There's a lot to love about a snow day. Inevitably, the giant plastic bin of snow clothes will throw up all over my living room and I will get to spend at least six hours bundling my kids up for the spectacular five minutes they will spend outside. Then I get to make five kinds of "hot food (we're freezing)" for lunch and then mop up all the melted snow and wash all the mildew snow clothes. Ahh, a snow day. Lovely.

I've decided I'm going to keep this blog going long after all this cancer drama is over. I love all of you too much and I don't want to lose touch with you. Your comments mean so much to me. I just hope without cancer I can still find something of interest to say. Also, I'm right in the middle of America, so if you're ever near St. Louis - call me. We'll go to lunch. You're my best friend.

I had cancer this morning

I had cancer this morning, but now i don't! It's over and I am all done. I had my last treatment this morning. Phew! It's been kind of a teary day for me. I don't know if it is because I am tired, because I am done, because Andrea left or because I feel like I don't have to be strong for another minute. It is a very happy day, though. I feel so much relief. The top picture is of my machine and the therapists that became my good friends. I will miss them. The next one is lunch today with my friends to celebrate. Thanks, everyone!

Jaymeson and I were talking about the house we want and all the work it will take to update it and I said,"that's ok, we have nothing but time" and that made me cry because time is what I have. It's the greatest gift I've ever been given. Time to watch my kids grow. Time to keep growing myself. This life is short and precious and I'm glad I get more of it. What a blessing.

One thing I like about living in the midwest is watching things grow. There is something soothing and reassuring about it. We have cornfields around us that I love. I hope they never build over them. It reminds us that life goes on and that miracles happen every day. I feel like cancer is like winter. It's cold and nothing grows. It's hard to get through, but I always knew spring was just around the corner. The whole metaphor is reinforced with the timing of my hair coming back. It's spring! Cancer is over and things are growing. Miracles happen every day.

Carrie is worried...

Carrie is worried about me, so I better drop a note. I have been sleeping or working every minute for the last two weeks. I am very tired. I only have FIVE treatments left. Can you believe it? I wonder what to do with this blog after that? When am I officially through this? Do I make it into my family blog then? Do I print it out and bury it in a weird ceremony with incense and voodoo dolls? I am unsure.

It seems I don't have so much to say these days. I wake up, go to radiation, come home, work, sleep. My Aunt Nancy made good on her offer and has been out here helping since last wednesday. I like her very much. She is wise and fun. She made me orange rolls out of clementines. Mmmmm. My kids love her, too. Mason started out calling her "that friend", then "crocker" (unsure about that) and now Nancy. Preslie can even say "Nancy". (She calls me "Daddy". Mystery.)

I am growing real hair. Dark and soft. It's strange. Usually when someone shaves his or her head and it starts growing back it's all stubbly and spiky. Not mine. Soft, soft. Touching my head feels like petting a rat. Maybe I'll get brave and take a picture. Probably not. I'm getting my dark eyelashes back and they are soft and curly. I liked my old ones better.

My chest hurts. I can feel it now (and taste it!) when they radiate me. I'm glad it's almost over. I can't work out anymore and I'm so very tired. Are you getting tired of me saying that I am tired? It makes me tired.

That's it for now. I'm sorry I don't have more to say. Hopefully when I get this catalog done we can laugh and play more.

Blondes have more fun

Right? What if it's baby-fine blonde hair all over one's whole body? What if it's like that creepy blonde hair newborns have on their shoulders? If that's all over me, will I have more fun? Even my face! Gross. I am going to wax my face tomorrow. My eyebrows and eyelashes are like that, too. Anyone who has known me at all knows that blonde eyebrows and eyelashes aren't normal. Remember when I had that big, thick unibrow that none of you had the guts to tell me about? I'm thinking about shaving my head, too, because this weird hair isn't helping anything and it won't ever do me any good. I'm a creepy newborn. Good because all I want to do is sleep, eat and cry. Actually, I don't want to cry. I am happy now. I have my energy back again. I was pretty darn sick the last couple days, but I am better now. I think I catch every little bug that goes around and I can't fight it very well once I have it. AND to make any sickness worse, they won't let me miss radiation for anything! I end up dragging my sick self and my two smallest monkeys (one of which has a broken monkey-foot) there no matter what. Cancer is such a mean taskmaster. (Poor me, boo hoo.)

But not for long. I know the final score and it is ME:1 vs Cancer:0. I have completed 11 of my 23 radiation treatments (even though I think they did Thursday's backwards - don't tell 'em). I'm getting a funny-shaped tan on my chest and back. I'm tired, too, but that's about it for side-effects. Phew! I have feeling in all my toes again and almost all of my blisters are gone! My fingers are still pretty numb and I have four nails that want to fall off. They've pulled back about half way. Should I cut them off? Should I risk leaving them on? You can't tell by looking at them because I have them polished so maybe I'll wait it out.

I just reread this and I sound like a real attttraaaaccttive gal. Oh well. You love me and that's all that matters. There were a bunch of applicants who are trying to get into the Radiation Oncology dept at Washington University (Jaymeson's program) on the elevator with me this morning. (I was looking especially cancery without my wig.) I told them that It is a very hands-on program. So hands-on, in fact, that if they feel you haven't learned all you are supposed to learn by your last year - they'll make sure your wife gets cancer so you will be compelled to finish your education. Nobody laughed. Cancer just isn't as funny as it used to be, I guess. Oh well.

As I get closer to the end of this saga, I look back sometimes and think, "Really? That happened? I had cancer and chemo and radiation?? I could have died?" I don't believe it. It has really gone by fast and I have been so blessed though the whole thing. I've become very attached to my ward(s) and my family and my friends - new and old. Most of all, I've become very attached to my Savior. I think even more than being here for me through all of this, He has taken a lot of the pain and sickness from me. He has made hard times pass quickly and good times last longer. I have honestly heard the words "This, too, shall pass" whispered in my ear. He has inspired my family and friends to be here for me and take care of all of my needs. So much of this is a blur to me. I am glad I have this blog so I can go back and remember. Thanks for checking it and thus forcing me to write. I love you.

Hey Denmark!

One thing a shelby-centered person (like myself) likes to do is check the traffic of my blog and see where my friends are. Sometimes I see that there are people from all over the world but I usually dismiss it as someone who clicks "next blog" but doesn't know me or read on. There have been a few times though where international super spies (maybe not) have logged on more than once... there was someone in Italy, New Zealand and now someone in Denmark. Leave a comment! I'm dying to know!

ok. bye.

Radiant

Hi. Four down and about 19 to go - radiation treatments that is. No problem. I'm tired and I feel like I have a lump in my throat, but other than that - es no so bad. My doctor said that I'll get a bad sore throat, but that hasn't happened yet. Maybe that will keep me from shoving my face. Probably not. I have quite the will-power when it comes to eating.

I definitely like going to radiation more than chemo, if only for the people I get to hang with. We all get gowned-up and go to a waiting room and talk about how blessed we are while comparing wigs and chest-paintings. Cancer is no respecter of persons. We are young, old, rich and poor. I happen to be all of those things. I have taken my kids a few times. They go and sit at jaymee's desk to draw pictures and quote Harry Potter for the nurses. I'm there about 10 minutes, so they only wear out their welcome by about nine and a half. School starts again tomorrow. Phew!

Seems like I have been busy-busy ever since the minute I felt ok. Christmas everything (I even went to Wal*Mart the saturday before - what am I? Nuts?) then Jaymeson's sister and her family came to visit and go to Wicked with us. Then New Years (I celebrated with New York and then went to bed at 11:01. Every party needs a pooper...) And now work is back with a vengeance! It's good to work again. I like feeling like I am accomplishing something. I'm getting back into my real life. I have even ran in slow motion a couple times. Hooray for nike+ shoes. Santa wants me to get off my bum and get back into shape. I am a sorry sack of shelby. Did you know that chemo actually makes you lose muscle tone? I have heard that laying on the couch for three months does too, but I prefer to blame chemo... or society. I don't know what that means.
